Bring your data together and listen to its story

The advent of digital age led to a new data revolution. Data is viewed as a new high worth commodity that can enable organisations to analyse their current operations, optimise their processes and predict their future offerings. Organisations are now realising the true potential of data but struggling to derive meaningful insights from the data. Not just the private sector, even public sector organisations are struggling and under pressure to provide digital services to citizens powered by data. Public sector organisations have a huge amount of data, right from citizens’ personally identifiable information, confidential medical information, financial information, social security information and so much more. Accessing and using this data poses several challenges to the public sector organisations.

In order to provide a holistic view, the data from the different departments needs to be integrated as each entity holds vital information about different aspects of the public. Amalgamation of this data can help the Government come up with advanced digital services. This leads to the first challenge faced by the public sector organisations-the integration of data. Different departments use exclusive techniques which makes integrating departmental data all the more difficult.

As highlighted before, the nature of the data held by the public sector is highly confidential. Securing the data from falling into wrong hands is the prerogative of the organisations. Even if the technical barrier of integrating the data is mitigated, another major challenge is integrating the data securely. A uniform process needs to be defined to secure the data at rest, in transit as well as encryption mechanism.

We spoke about the challenges faced by the organisation for integrating the data from different departments and securely integrating the data for further processing. One of the challenges that organisations face internally is auditing and governing the data. The highly regulated public sector organisations are constantly audited for integrity and compliance which means the organisations can leverage the use of data integration to define a new process for auditing and optimising the processes. Advanced analytics, dark data identification, machine learning can be used to define the new process.

A well known writer and programmer, Daniel Keys Moran rightly said, “You can have data without information but you cannot have information without data”. Realisation of this truth and taking steps towards attaining this truth is what will help the organisations provide better services. The path is not a bed of roses but the right partners, right technology and right people will help the organisations sail through.
