Driving Internal Sustainability in the Tech Sector: 3 Ways to Empower Change from Within

06 Jul 2023 by Emma Foster 4 minute read

As Digital Leaders ambassador for Northern Ireland, Anaeko hosted a flagship event around using data to drive the sustainable revolution in transport. This event delved into the groundbreaking innovations and cutting-edge technologies that are reshaping the transportation sector and propelling us towards a greener and more efficient future.

We discussed how data-driven strategies enable smarter route planning, optimise energy consumption, and facilitate the adoption of alternative fuels and electric vehicles, all with the aim of achieving a net zero carbon footprint. One question that was highlighted and drove further discussion was:

We are a tech company that offers a supply chain management solution to the transport sector to help deliver sustainability across the sector but how do we focus on making our company more sustainable internally?

Harnessing Renewable Energy

Brian Roche, from BDR Management Consultancy, says one of the fundamental ways to promote sustainability within a company is by powering your solutions with renewable energy. By utilising clean energy sources, such as solar or wind power, we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint and minimise our impact on the environment. Incorporating renewable energy into your operations not only aligns with a commitment to sustainability but also sets a positive example for customers and stakeholders.

Sustainable Cloud Storage

Cloud storage has revolutionised the way we manage data, but it also comes with environmental implications. As a part of our internal sustainability efforts, we can explore using cloud storage providers that prioritise sustainable practices. Opting for providers who prioritise energy-efficient infrastructure and employ environmentally friendly practices will help us minimise our carbon footprint associated with data storage. By making conscious choices about our cloud storage solutions, we can contribute to a more sustainable future.

Reducing Carbon Footprint

Choosing the right platform architecture is another crucial aspect of internal sustainability. By selecting a platform that enables the least impact on emissions, we can develop and offer zero-emission solutions to our customers. These solutions not only benefit our business by reducing our scope one emissions but also contribute to lowering the carbon footprint of our customers, thus positively impacting our scope three emissions. By focusing on sustainable platform architecture, we can align our business objectives with environmental responsibility.

Jack Manning, from Safely, draws insight from working with supply chain management companies, providing sustainable solutions but also looking internally to take proactive steps towards sustainability. When faced with challenges like transitioning to electric vehicles, pioneering fleets have shown that finding solutions is possible through perseverance and dedication. By taking action and implementing sustainable practices, companies can overcome obstacles and pave the way for a more sustainable future. Waiting for a perfect solution is not productive; instead, taking small steps towards sustainability will yield progress and results.

While the transport sector grapples with rising fuel and shipping costs, it is inspiring to witness the industry's commitment to sustainability through the application of data-driven solutions. Empowering a carbon reduction committee can bring about positive change and lead to a return on investment that directly impacts our bottom line. By integrating sustainability into your company culture and operations, it can contribute to a greener future while also reaping the benefits of improved efficiency and cost savings.

For the tech company in question operating in the transport sector they can commit to sustainability that goes beyond providing solutions to their customers. By focusing on internal sustainability, such as harnessing renewable energy, adopting sustainable cloud storage, and prioritising efficient platform architecture, they can set an example for the industry and make a meaningful impact on the environment. Moreover, driving operational efficiency hand in hand with sustainability allows us to achieve cost savings and long-term success. Let us embark on this journey towards internal sustainability and pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
