Transport-related emissions make up 16.2% of the global total, and road transport alone accounted for 11.9%. In the UK, transport contributes to 34% of the country's carbon emissions. The challenges are expected to intensify as road use and aviation demand increase in the coming years. These alarming statistics highlight the need for immediate action to curb emissions and adopt sustainable practices in the transportation industry.
“Smart City” is a term used to describe an urban area that utilise technology to both improve existing services, and to solve new and emerging issues that Urban Living and Urban Growth present. The world is an increasingly urbanised place. The United Nations state that in 2018 55% of the world’s population lived in urbanised areas, with growth projected to see this increase to around 68% by 2050. Managing this growth and the required extension of services and resources to accommodate it is a huge challenge for local and national governments across the world.
The adoption of digital solutions, scaled across multiple industries, will reduce carbon emissions and build towards global government pledges to bring global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions to net zero by 2050. Analysis by Accenture, in collaboration with the World Economic Forum, shows that digital technologies could deliver up to 20% of the 2050 reduction needed.
Big Data has many opportunities and will be the foundation behind any new technology to enable reporting, measurement, analytics, and operation. Big data doesn't just allow industries to track success but is crucial to the function and use of digital technology.
The implications of global warming and the sustainability of industries that consume significant energy and other resources have become more of a central concern in industrialised countries with global governments pledging to bring global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions to net zero by 2050. In order to reach net zero industries and companies will need to see where their most significant environmental impacts are, measure and report on them to communicate to stakeholders and ultimately work towards driving improvements. One way to do this is to define company wide environmental KPIs and manage environmental impact based on these.
